Perhaps we could start an international effort to send people to the moon, Mars, and beyond. Each country would contribute a certain amount of money. If enough people sign up, then this could be done within a single government's budget. Once there, we would explore the moon, Mars, and beyond.

How would they get around on the trip? How would they get from their base to their destination? And how would they get their food? It would be pretty easy because it would just be a one-way ride.

You might even have a lunar colony too, and they wouldn't need to go to the Moon. However, they would have a habitat to live in, and they would have their own supply of food, which would be imperative. Plus, there would be some form of water on the planet, which would be very valuable indeed.
